In Elil's Vale of Legends, players start out by choosing a legend from a selection including Paul Bunyan, Baba Yaga, Hercules, Morgan LeFey, and others. Selection of a hero is done in a style invented by Elil (see left picture) which allows players to view the abilities, statistics, and a small amount of biographical information about the legends before choosing them.

Instead of typical Warcraft items such as ankhs and tomes, Elil's Vale of Legends includes custom items such as Angel's Blood which gives a character 2 extra armor while they carry it and additionally resurrects that character when they die; Phoenix's Blood which gives a character 5 additional points in all abilities while they hold it, resurrects that character when they die with the 5 additional ability points now permanent to that character, and makes the character invincible for a few seconds; or Titan's Blood which increases mana regeneration when held by a character, or when used, teleports all nearby heroes to their starting locations.

Each type of shrine sells different things. Shrines of Goblins (see above picture) sell only Angel's Blood. Shrines of Souls (pictured to the left) allow players to buy different, additional legendary heroes such as Leonardo DaVinci or Icarus to help them support their allies.

Shrines of Legends (see right) allow heroes who have earned enough gold through defeating many enemies to ascend to Demigodhood. Very powerful characters can earn enough to ascend twice or even three times. There are three legendary items for heroes to ascend with: Pan Gu's Axe, Kokopelli's Flute, and Midas's Scepter, all with different effects. Shrines of Legends also sell Johnny Appleseed's Bag for a lower price. When a character uses Johnny Appleseed's Bag, it causes an apple tree to grow next to them. This player can then use the tree to build apples, items which increase statistics when held or heal characters when used.

In Elil's Vale of Legends, the computer's units are created in Circles of Souls (see left), and then move towards the center of the map to fight the other computer team's units. To win the game, players must destroy the main Circle of Souls for the other team.

Players can also buy Circle Makers from Shrines of Souls which allow them to build their own minor Circles of Souls which create units that the players can control.

Elil's Vale of Legends includes all new terrain created by Elil which includes multiple levels, forests, swamps, pathways, and waterfalls (see left).

Also, the map includes several new attack effects such as Skybreak (picture at right), a demonstration of which is included on the Demonstration Maps page for other mapmakers to see how it is done and implement it in their own maps.
